Traveling with a child is a completely different kind of traveling. Period. My husband and are pretty well-traveled people, but we were complete novices when it came to our first flights with our baby. We flew with him across the Atlantic for a month-long trip to visit family…and it was agonizing.

We’d been told by other new parents who’d flown recently that traveling was surprisingly easy for them — that the airport workers and security had given them the red carpet treatment. I think this got our hopes up, making the reality that much more painful. Avoid unnecessary misery by learning from our mistakes the first go-around.

Babies and airports

The first thing I’ll address is this: the idea that people at the airport let you cut in front of everyone else if you have a child is not a universal truth. Therefore, I wouldn’t expect it. In fact, expect the worst and you’ll be able to better handle any and all of the struggles that took us off guard.
