Why Humility is so Attractive, and How to Increase your Own

According to ENotes, the word humility comes from the Latin word humulis, meaning ‘low’ or ‘close to the ground’.

Aren’t people attracted to power, though? Why would seeing someone humble themselves attract anyone? you might ask.

Power, along with intelligence and popularity, are completely separate traits from humility. The person who has those first two or three traits AND humility is…somewhat of a unicorn. We’ll talk about that extreme case first, just to demonstrate.

Humility is actually what makes someone with power and popularity attractive as a person. If you’ve ever known someone who lots of other people also knew, but everyone kind of talked about them behind their back, chances are there was something not genuine about them. People can sense that in others. Maybe they had an arrogance that just made you kind of hate them and stifle the urge to roll your eyes every time they spoke.

Motivational speaker Lolly Daskal said, “Likable people are humble enough to know that they are not better than anyone else but they are wise enough to know they are different from the rest.”

What makes someone truly likable is their humility. The reason it’s so rare to come across someone with money, power, and popularity who is also humble is that power…
